Job summary

The State of Missouri is seeking an environmental intern to support the environmental studies unit in Jefferson City. The intern works under direct supervision on routine tasks to help ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Responsibilities include evaluating projects for environmental impacts, preparing and reviewing internal reports and permit follow-ups, and assisting with regulatory research and field investigations as needed. Typical hours are Mon-Fri, 7:30 a.m.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled full-time in a relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's degree program.
  • Overall GPA of 2.0+ on a 4.0 scale.
  • Completed 30 credit hours toward current degree program.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate environmental projects for impacts and compliance; present findings to staff.
  • Prepare, edit, and review internal reports and permit follow-ups.
  • Gather information to develop technical reports for FHWA and agencies.
  • Research laws and guidance; assist with literature searches and core project teams.
  • Assist field investigations related to floodplain, wetlands, endangered species, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The environmental intern performs routine activities with regard to assisting the environmental studies unit in an effort to comply with environmental regulations. Responsibilities are performed under direct supervision.

  • Evaluate projects for environmental impacts and compliance with state, federal and organizational guidelines; present information to department staff through frequent and regular communications; make recommendations regarding the need to avoid or minimize environmental impacts or develop compensatory mitigation plans.
  • Prepare, edit, and review internal reports, correspondence, and graphic materials as it relates to environmental regulations, requirements, or other environmental issues; including follow up on permit requests as assigned.
  • Obtain detailed information from environmental staff and district personnel to develop, write and edit technical reports in accordance with department policies and practices for approval by the Federal Highway Administration and other agencies.
  • Research topics concerning federal or state legislation, regulatory agency guidance, and performs literature or computer searches on various environmental topics; provide technical assistance in understanding and complying with state, federal, and organizational environmental standards and regulations, and participate on project core teams.
  • May assist with field investigations and analysis regarding floodplain, wetlands and parkland evaluations, endangered species, pollinators, plants, noise assessments, land use determinations, or socio-economic studies.
  • Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's degree program full time (12+ credit hours).
  • Must possess, and maintain, an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher out of 4.0.
  • 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
Special Working Conditions And Job Characteristics
  • This is a wage, non-benefits eligible position, working no more than 1,039 hours per year.
  • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • The typical working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
