Job summary

The Florida Department of Health is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to perform environmental health inspections and enforcement duties in the Brevard County area. The role involves septic system and facility inspections, data entry, and permit issuance, with hands-on fieldwork using tools such as bucket augers and laser levels.

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree in a relevant science, is able to travel long distances, lift heavy weights, and work in challenging weather

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in public health, environmental health, environmental science, or a physical or biological science.
• Ability to travel to Brevard County up to 100+ miles a day.
• Ability to lift 50+ pounds and work outside in all weather.

Responsibilities

• Conducts inspections of septic systems and Aerobic Treatment Units.
• Conducts field inspections of regulated facilities.
• Issues enforcement action for non-compliant properties.
• Enforces septic system regulations.
• Responsible for all data entry of all inspections and other work completed.
• Reviews septic system applications.
• Writes and issues septic system permits.
• Uses bucket auger to profile soils to depth of 72 inches.
