Job summary

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is seeking an Environmental Specialist III in Augusta. The role focuses on administering the Overboard Discharge (OBD) Compliance Inspection Program and overseeing the statewide inspection effort for licensed OBD systems.

Responsibilities include directing inspections, training seasonal aides, managing compliance data, and providing regulatory guidance to permit holders and contractors throughout licensing, operation, and enforcement cycles.

Qualifications

• Six-year combination of education and/or experience in environmental, biological, physical science or engineering, with two years of environmental experience.
• Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework.

Responsibilities

• Conduct and manage the annual OBD compliance inspection program, including on-site and offshore inspections and follow-up.
• Direct, train, and oversee seasonal Conservation Aides for the OBD program.
• Monitor and manage OBD compliance, including data review and enforcement actions.
• Provide technical guidance to OBD permit holders and contract operators on operation and maintenance.
• Maintain OBD program records and coordinate with Licensing and Enforcement Units.
