Job summary

Merrill Steel in Wisconsin seeks a Welder/Fabricator to join its heavy structural steel production team. The role emphasizes flux-core welding, fabrication, layout, and accuracy to ensure quality of complex pieces.

Certification and experience with reading prints are highly valued; welders are provided air-exchange helmets. Responsibilities include laying out, aligning, and welding parts per blueprints, inspecting work, and maintaining tight tolerances.

Qualifications

• Pass unlimited 1G weld test.
• Pass 5/16" 2F horizontal fillet weld test (destructive and visual).
• Able to gauge weld sizes.
• Able to understand written weld procedures.
• Able to visually identify 1/2" multipass horizontal fillet (within 30 days).
• Able to repair defects and repair defective welds (within 60 days).
• Pass unlimited 2G weld test with backer (within 90 days).
• Understanding of required preheat procedures.
• Ability to adjust welding parameters.

Responsibilities

• Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
• Verify conformance of work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
• Tack-weld fitted parts together.
• Lay out and examine metal stock or work pieces to be processed to ensure specifications are met.
• Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
