Job summary

The Town of Chapel Hill is seeking qualified Signs & Markings Technicians to install, maintain, and repair town signage and pavement markings. Positions support event responses, inclement weather coverage, and routine maintenance with supervision.

Technicians progressively handle sign fabrication, traffic control planning, and data logging while coordinating with residents and contractors. Safety sensitive roles require driving and related certifications.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalency is required.
• IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician II Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Successful completion of Work Zone Traffic Control course and IMSA certification within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Apply MUTCD guidelines to signage and pavement markings.
• Install, maintain, repair, and remove signs and posts under supervision.
• Install routine or new pavement markings (crosswalks, parking tees, stop bars).
• Support work zone safety and traffic control operations for events or closures.
• Assist in designing signs and fabricating them with available tools.
• Maintain equipment and vehicle cleanliness and logs.
• Request locates and operate hand tools; drive Sign Shop vehicles as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned under supervision.
