The Town of Chapel Hill is seeking an experienced Traffic Engineering Technician to operate the Traffic Management Center, monitor CCTV feeds, and adjust signal timing to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow in the Town. This role requires hands-on experience with Centracs, MUTCD standards, and field timing adjustments.

The position involves coordinating with NCDOT and consultants, analyzing traffic data, and supporting special events with timing changes.

Qualifications

• Three years of progressive and related experience in traffic signal system operations and maintenance.
• Knowledge of MUTCD and NCDOT standards pertaining to traffic signals and signage.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with Town employees, contractors, and the public.
• Read and interpret signal plans and maps, and compile and analyze traffic data.

Responsabilités

• Oversee Traffic Management Center (TMC) operations and CCTV feeds to ensure proper traffic flow.
• Manage servers providing remote access to VMS boards, cameras, and the traffic signal system.
• Design and implement messages for VMS boards throughout the Town.
• Analyze traffic signal reports and detection data to ensure controller data aligns with Centracs database.
• Input timing plans in the field and maintain accurate signal plans in cabinets.
• Review traffic patterns and adjust signal timing plans as needed; redline revisions as required.
• Coordinate timing plan revisions from NCDOT, consultants, or supervisor.
• Diagnose repairs with supervisors or technicians; refer to external contractors if needed.
• Notify supervisors about signal-related emergencies and adjustments.
• Implement timing plans for special events and generate related report data.
• Attend meetings with stakeholders for special events; share camera views via Teams on request.
• Be present in TMC during special events and adverse weather.
• Retrieve timing data for legal timing requests as needed.
• Complete all other duties as assigned.
