Job summary

DelDOT Maintenance & Operations seeks an entry-level Equipment Operator I to support road maintenance tasks and emergency response. The role involves learning department rules, operating a range of road and off-road equipment, and performing routine preventive maintenance under supervision.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment including lubricating, cleaning, and servicing.
• Knowledge of operating a variety of equipment used in repair, maintenance, and development of roads, grounds, or structures such as jack hammers, power saws, air compressors, or hydraulic post drivers.
• Knowledge of operating motorized equipment used for groundskeeping, snow removal, or hauling materials.
• Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Responsibilities

• Drives and controls on/off-road equipment to haul supplies to and from the work site, possibly on public highways.
• Manipulates equipment with integrated systems by coding computers or adjusting levers, gears, valves, or switches.
• Operates mobile equipment and hand tools to dig, ditch, grade, backfill, and clear areas.
• Loads and unloads rock, debris, earth, trees and materials using various tools and vehicles.
• Operates hand tools to make general repairs of roads, grounds, and/or structures.
• Performs construction/maintenance in trades such as carpentry, welding, masonry.
• Responds to environmental/highway emergencies to control snow, spills, debris.
• Uses traffic control techniques to manage traffic movements.
• Performs preventive maintenance checks and minor repairs; reports issues.
• May operate draw and swing bridges to permit road and water traffic.
