Job summary

State of Delaware is seeking an entry-level Equipment Operator I to support road maintenance and construction projects. You will learn department rules, operate on/off-road equipment, and assist with general repairs under supervision.

The role requires overtime availability, including storm events, and may include hazard pay. Responsibilities include operating a range of heavy and hand tools, performing preventive maintenance, and complying with safety and environmental guidelines.

Qualifications

Knowledge of preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of operating a variety of equipment used in repair, maintenance, and development of roads, grounds, or structures.
Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
Must obtain CDL Class A or B during the initial 90‑day probationary period.

Responsibilities

Drive and control on/off-road equipment to haul supplies to and from the work site, including public highways.
Operate equipment with integrated mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic controls.
Dig, ditch, slope, strip, grade, backfill, mow, and clear/excavate using hand tools and machinery.
Load and unload rock, debris, earth, trees and materials using loaders, trucks or forklifts.
Perform repairs using jackhammers, power saws, air compressors, and hydraulic tools.
Conduct preventive maintenance and inspections; report damages or needed services.
Assist with bridge operations to allow water/road traffic passage when required.
