Job summary

DelDOT Maintenance & Operations is seeking an entry-level Equipment Operator I to learn department rules, operate on/off-road equipment, and assist with road and grounds maintenance. The position requires readiness for overtime, including storms, and may include snow removal responsibilities.

Applicants must have a valid CDL and be able to work in diverse weather conditions, with potential for promotion after completing standards. Orientation may occur in Kent or New Castle County locations.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Knowledge of operating a variety of equipment used in repair, maintenance, and development of roads, grounds, or structures.
• Knowledge of operating motorized equipment used for groundskeeping or snow removal.
• Possession of a valid Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Drive and control on/off-road equipment to haul supplies to and from the work site.
• Operate equipment with integrated mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic controls.
• Dig, ditch, grade, and excavate with hand tools.
• Load and unload rock, debris, earth, and materials using trucks and loaders.
• Perform general road, grounds, and structure repairs with hand tools.
• Respond to environmental/highway emergencies and control spills.
• Use traffic control techniques to manage traffic.
• Conduct preventive maintenance and inspections; report needed repairs.
• May operate draw and swing bridges when required.
