Job summary

FirstEnergy Corp in Akron, OH is seeking an entry-level Transmission System Operator to support the safe and reliable dispatch of the energy grid. You will assist in switching, load balancing, and coordination with field crews, with formal training toward NERC/PJM certification.

The role emphasizes developing analytical skills, teamwork, and proficiency with operation reports and EMS software. On-the-job training and progression opportunities toward Operator II are provided.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2–4 years of an accredited engineering or technical school degree or equivalent experience with a high school diploma or equivalent
• Must satisfy requirements of the EEi System Operator/Power Dispatching Test (SOPD)
• Able to meet all FirstEnergy, NERC and PJM operator certification requirements as responsibilities progress

Responsibilities

• Assist in controlling operation of the transmission system in a safe, reliable and efficient manner
• Assist in ordering operational changes to meet load fluctuations or losses of generation equipment, substation equipment or transmission lines
• Assist in issuing transmission switching orders to switchmen and power plant personnel
• Perform special operating studies and prepare reports, load flows and other operating data
• Assist in coordinating system operators from other companies
• Schedule work on substation, transmission line and power plant equipment
• Assist in placing safety tags and issuing clearances or switching controls
• Assist in preparing new or revised switching orders and operating procedures
• Operate the Energy Management System computer application
• Use corporate applications including EDOA and Access Databases
• Diagnose causes of trouble and determine restoration steps including rerouting energy
• Obtain weather data to forecast loads
• Coordinate with regional personnel on customer problems
