GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. is seeking entry-level Geotechnical Engineers to join our team in Norwood or Amesbury, MA. We welcome May 2027 graduates with Civil or Geotechnical degrees who are eager to start their careers at a nationally recognized, employee-owned firm.

You will contribute to a diverse project portfolio including foundations, tunnels, dams, and underground construction, while gaining hands-on experience in both office and field settings under the guidance of seasoned professionals.

Qualifications

  • Expected graduation May 2027 with a Civil or Geotechnical Engineering degree.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) is a plus.
  • Strong communication, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail with excellent analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Strong grounding in geotechnical engineering principles and field exposure.

Responsibilities

  • Execute subsurface exploration and in-situ testing to evaluate soils and bedrock for foundation design.
  • Perform field construction observation during foundation installations and underpinning activities.
  • Analyze field data and perform geotechnical calculations (e.g., slope stability, bearing capacity, settlements).
  • Prepare field summary reports and to draft technical documents and specifications.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, and team members.
  • Support One Company approach and assist with tasks beyond primary duties.
  • Follow safety instructions and site policies.

Job description

GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is seeking Entry-Level Geotechnical Engineers to join our team in our Norwood or Amesbury, Massachusetts offices. We welcome applications from students graduating in May 2027 with a degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering who are looking to launch their careers with a nationally recognized employee-owned consulting firm.

The successful candidate will have a strong academic background, a solid understanding of geotechnical engineering fundamentals, and an interest in gaining hands‑on experience in both office and field settings. You will contribute to a diverse portfolio of infrastructure, building development, energy, and underground construction projects while working alongside experienced industry professionals. Prior internship, co‑op, or field experience is beneficial but not required.

Note: We are currently recruiting for students graduating in May 2027. Anticipated start dates are expected to occur in late Spring through Summer 2027, based on graduation date and candidate availability.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Executing subsurface exploration and in‑situ testing programs to evaluate soil and bedrock conditions in connection with foundation design & construction projects
  • Performing field construction observation during installation of shallow and deep foundation installation and testing, underpinning and other tasks related to underground construction and ground improvement for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Evaluating field data and performing engineering analyses/calculations, such as slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, lateral pile analyses, and design/evaluation of earth support and underpinning systems (Experience with software such as SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, LPile, Settle3, and Plaxis is a plus)
  • Writing field summary reports, drafts of field and engineering reports, technical specifications, and other technical documents
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with contractors, clients, and team members.
  • Support GZA’s “One Company” approach by assisting with tasks outside primary responsibilities as needed.
  • Perform work safely. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies
Qualifications:
  • Expected completion of a BS degree in Civil Engineering or MS in Civil Engineering with focus in Geotechnical Engineering in May 2027
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) is a plus
  • Effective communication, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical capabilities
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills resulting in exceptional rapport with people
  • Strong academic knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles; including advanced soil mechanics, deep foundations, shallow foundations, slope stability, seismic engineering, retaining wall design, earth retention, settlement of compressible soils, and ground improvement techniques
  • Ability to understand design drawings and relate them to construction activities
  • Ability to work locally and regionally. Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license in good standing and have a consistent means of transportation to/from project sites

The base salary for this position may range between $70,000 and $95,000. The actual base salary and total compensation will depend on many factors, including location, candidate experience, education, professional licensure, and other qualifications.
