Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Phoenix is seeking an Assistant Distribution Engineer to support project teams designing 2.4kV to 34.5kV overhead and underground distribution systems. Under supervision of a licensed engineer, you will contribute to design, calculations, and documentation throughout design and construction phases.

Responsibilities include preparing cost estimates, BOMs, voltage drop and pole loading calculations, and assisting with field inspections and client communications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Engineering or related field from an accredited program.
• FE exam required or in progress.
• ABET accredited program preferred.
• Internship or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of electrical distribution power flow preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office).
• Basic distribution design software experience preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and teamwork skills.
• Engineering in Training (EIT) certification preferred.
• 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in design of distribution projects from conceptual phase to design completion.
• Prepare distribution packages for overhead and underground projects.
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, BOMs, and other deliverables.
• Perform distribution calculations (cable pulling, voltage drop, pole loading).
• Apply knowledge of NESC standards and utility procedures.
• Assist with field inspections of facilities.
• Gather project data for managers.
• Assist with vegetation management, ROW, and outage planning.
• Support client presentations and project status visualization.
• Other duties as assigned.
