Job summary

Burns & McDonnell’s Denver office is seeking an Assistant Distribution Engineer to support project teams in delivering distribution designs for 2.4kV to 34.5kV overhead and underground systems. You will assist with design, pricing, BOMs, and equipment installation, while applying NESC and utility standards under licensed supervision.

The role emphasizes teamwork, analytical problem solving, and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program.
  • FE exam required or successfully completed.
  • ABET-accredited program strongly preferred.
  • Internship or related consulting experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical distribution power flow preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Basic distribution design software experience preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • EIT Certification preferred.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design of distribution projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
  • Assist in preparation and development of distribution voltage packages for overhead and underground projects.
  • Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, bill of materials, and other required deliverables.
  • Perform distribution calculations, including cable pulling, voltage drop, and pole loading calculations.
  • Apply basic knowledge of NESC standards and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
  • Assist with field inspections for overhead and underground electric facilities.
  • Assist with research and compile project-related data as required by project managers.
  • Assist project team with communication regarding vegetation management, ROW, and outage planning.
  • Assist with client presentations, reports, and visualizations to demonstrate results and project status.
  • Performs other duties as assigned; Complies with policies and standards.
