Job summary

The City of Durham is seeking entry-level 911 call takers for the Durham Emergency Communications Center. You'll answer emergency calls, follow protocol, enter details for responders, and route calls to the right division. Training academy starts soon; promotion opportunities to dispatch positions exist.

Initially you’ll work in a 4-on/4-off pattern with 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Bilingual ability and readiness for certification are required within time frames.

Qualifications

• High School/GED required.
• Six months experience in a fast paced customer service environment.
• Certification in IAED Police, Fire and EMS call taking protocols within 6 months of hire.
• CPR Healthcare Provider Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Pass psychological exam prior to hire.
• Must learn one dispatch discipline within 18 months of employment.
• No Class B misdemeanor in last 10 years; no felony conviction.
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Compliance with NCOEMS requirements as applicable.

Responsibilities

• Answer and process emergency and administrative phone calls.
• Follow scripted protocol questions and collect information for responders.
• Type information accurately while reading protocol questions.
• Route calls by categorizing and directing to appropriate division.
• Create service requests and follow up with city departments.
