Job summary

Mercury is seeking a Data & AI Governance leader to build and spearhead an enterprise-wide governance program for data and AI. Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, this leader will establish practical standards for data ownership, development, usage, protection, and monitoring across the organization.

The ideal candidate combines governance and risk-management experience with technical fluency to work with Data, Engineering, Product, Information Security, Legal and Compliance.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of relevant experience in data governance, AI governance or related disciplines.
• Experience building or enhancing a data/AI governance program.
• Strong understanding of data ownership, stewardship, quality, lineage, metadata and lifecycle management.
• Knowledge of AI/ML concepts including generative AI, LLMs, explainability and bias.
• Experience creating practical, risk-based governance policies for fast-moving tech.
• Ability to coordinate across data, security, privacy, compliance and product functions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, able to explain complex concepts to executives and boards.
• Proven ability to influence senior leaders without relying on formal authority.
• Experience leading cross-functional programs with multiple stakeholders.
• Strong 1LOD/2LOD judgment and pragmatic, risk-focused thinking.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement Mercury’s enterprise Data and AI Governance frameworks, policies, standards, and operating model.
• Establish accountability for data ownership, stewardship, quality, lineage, classification, access and retention.
• Create a risk-based governance process for AI use cases across their lifecycle.
• Develop responsible-AI principles covering transparency, explainability, fairness, privacy, security and oversight.
• Maintain an enterprise inventory of data assets and AI use cases with governance decisions.
• Define risk-based classifications and governance requirements by data/AI use case.
• Govern internally developed, vendor-provided, and embedded AI, including generative AI.
• Embed governance requirements into development and change-management processes.
• Coordinate with Model Risk Management on model eligibility and risk oversight.
• Partner with Information Security and Technology Risk on data protection, access and resilience.
• Work with Legal and Compliance on regulatory and privacy requirements.
• Develop processes to identify, document and remediate data- and AI-related risks.
• Establish metrics and reporting for data quality, governance maturity and AI adoption.
• Monitor regulatory developments and translate them into governance expectations.
• Support governance forums and decisions.
• Build and lead a high-performing Data & AI Governance team as the program matures.
• Promote a culture where data is an enterprise asset and AI is used responsibly.
