Job summary

Gusto is seeking a highly technical, customer-facing engineer who thrives at the intersection of engineering, solution architecture, and client delivery. You will own technical discovery, scope complex opportunities, and build production-grade solutions that automate payroll-tax compliance for customers.

You will work directly with stakeholders, scope and build end-to-end solutions, and ensure evidence of value through measurable hours saved and risk reduction.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in a customer-facing technical role such as Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Engineer, AI Engineer, Implementation Engineer, Solutions Architect, Technical Consultant, or similar.
• Proven track record of shipping production systems in ambiguous, client-facing environments with evidence of REST APIs, webhooks, event-driven systems, auth patterns, data modeling, idempotency and failure modes.
• Deep technical discovery skills to navigate high ambiguity.
• Ability to scope a technical solution from an opportunity and justify a subscription.
• Proven ability to present to engineers and executives.
• Entrepreneurial, mission-driven with empathy for clients.
• Bonus for HR/payroll platform integrations or MEDDPICC-style deal frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Scope and qualify technical feasibility early in ambiguous opportunities.
• Define requirements clearly for Sales, Product, and Engineering.
• Build proofs-of-concept when needed for feasibility assessments.
• Translate deployments into a strong business case for subscriptions.
• Own the build and embed with clients, writing production-ready code.
• Diagnose and fix data issues and jurisdiction mappings.
• Keep teams aligned as requirements evolve mid-engagement.
• Deliver builds and runbooks so Client Success can operate independently.
• Feed feedback into product and GTM strategy.
• Create implementation playbooks and deployment documentation.
