Job summary

Codal, a Chicago-based award-winning web design and development consultancy, seeks an experienced engineering leader to guide a squad of engineers through modern backend development and deliver scalable APIs and cloud infrastructure.

The role combines hands-on coding with technical leadership, collaborating with stakeholders to steer projects from discovery to delivery, uphold security standards, and foster a culture of quality and innovation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• 6+ years of hands-on full-stack development and technical leadership experience delivering enterprise-level projects.
• 3+ years of engineering lead experience, managing a team of 3-5.
• Deep expertise in technologies including Node.js, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, and modern frontend & CMS frameworks.
• Technical design experience for implementing complex web applications and scalable backend systems.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure/GCP, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Expertise in software architecture, database systems (BigQuery/SQL/NoSQL), and cloud-native applications.
• Strong communication, leadership, and Agile methodology skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead a squad of engineers through the complexities of modern backend development and ensure that frontend experiences are supported by high-performance APIs, secure data modeling, and optimized cloud infrastructure.
• Hands-on coding along with a team of 4-5 engineers, maintaining high quality and standards across the full stack to deliver high-performance technologies.
• Collaborate with client stakeholders, project managers, designers and engineering teams to guide projects from early discovery through delivery, acting as a key technical point of contact.
• Ensure solutions are practical, scalable, and well-built.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and code reviews to uphold best practices and security standards.
