Job summary

Summit Polymers is seeking an Engineer, Tooling, Injection Molds to lead the tooling development lifecycle from design through validation. You will coordinate design reviews, ensure on-time project milestones, and work with internal and external teams to diagnose tooling issues.

The role requires five years of tool-making or tool-design experience, strong problem-solving skills, and travel up to 15% to supplier sites or project locations. Exempt, full-time position in Michigan.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Engineer, Tooling, Injection Molds FLSA STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Manager, Engineering (Tooling Group)

SUMMARY

This is a highly technical position with responsibility for the coordination, development, design approval, build completion and function of injection molding tools. Works closely with internal and external teams during the project development phase to diagnose, analyze and recommend solutions for tooling concerns. Surveys, develops and maintains good working relationship with tooling suppliers to assure quality standards are met. Recommends and implements improvements to the tooling quality systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Under general supervision, the Tooling Engineer is responsible for the following major tasks:

1. Coordinates and leads design reviews, provides approval for manufacture to ensure timing completion to projected project schedules. This includes; design, build and all validation phases from mold kick off to FR approval.
2. Complies with all KBPD, TENG and other procedures as required and completes and distributes documentation on time.
3. Assures robust tool function for easy set up and maintenance.
4. Leads functional samples with the TEP, determines functional ready tooling targets, responsible for functional tool readiness and completes associated sample forms.
5. Leads the determination of and approves completion of tooling functional sample resolution activities.
6. With assistance from the Engineering Coordinator, assures the ‘On-Time’ submission of all necessary documentation or tasks to the USA PDT. Verifies Supplier Progress Reports and Progress Report Summaries to ensure completion to projected completion dates.
7. Professionally represents the company to a variety of tool vendors and others and acts as a liaison to resolve problems and concerns.
8. Provides Post-Kick off, Post-Design Review, and Post-Sample Event Supplier Review (Wrap up) Meetings as necessary.
9. Provides post sample parts and/or reports, Mold Critique Sheets and all other required documentation for every sample event. Provides copies of event documentation to Suppliers and other PDT members as necessary and posts to Sharepoint at the conclusion of all milestone events within < 24 hours.
10. Understands problem solving methods such as PPS (Practical Problem Solving), 8-D and A3 creation.
11. Provides technical support when needed to support Engineering, Plant or Customer teams.
12. Performs receiving service samples for off-shore built molds and follows up with all necessary documentation per KBPD and TENG procedures.
13. Other duties, projects, and special assignments as directed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Five years experience as a Tool Maker, Tool Designer, or Tool Repair technician. Must be able to work efficiently and independently with little to no supervision.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Possesses the ability to gather and analyze information and make decisions from a limited number of choices.

• A minimum score of 50 on the Wonderlic Contemporary Select Assessment (Traditional Score of 26 on the cognitive portion).

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

This position typically does require up to 15% travel.
