Job summary

The Utah Office of Energy Development (OED) is seeking an Engineering Technician to join our team at the Utah San Rafael State Energy Lab. The incumbent will perform routine chemical and physical processing and analysis on molten salt components using a range of instruments and maintain timely reporting and documentation.

Qualifications

• Pass a beryllium sensitivity blood test.
• Perform analytical tests and basic experiments with precision.
• Maintain high cleanliness, safety, and organization in the lab.
• Assist in the creation, implementation, and documentation of QA/QC procedures and SOPs.
• Stay updated with industry trends and technologies to improve lab practices.
• Ensure laboratory activities comply with relevant regulatory standards and policies.
• Perform routine maintenance and calibration of lab equipment and coordinate repairs.
• Accurately record, analyze, and report data with detailed notebooks.

Job Description

The Utah Office of Energy Development (OED) is seeking an Engineering Technician to join our team at the Utah San Rafael State Energy Lab. The ideal candidate will perform routine chemical and physical processing and analysis on molten salt components and products using hardware and analytical instruments and following the written methods and lab safety procedures, assist with instrument calibration, instrument maintenance, and technical document writing. The incumbent will share the responsibilities of keeping the work area clean, maintaining laboratory equipment, and updating the inventory of laboratory supplies. The Engineering Technician will be expected to complete the tasks in a timely manner and document all observations and test results according to the established procedures.Other tasks may be assigned, as needed, under the direction of the Research Engineering Manager.

It is anticipated that responsibilities will rapidly expand into other areas noted as areas of interest for the Lab. The Engineering Technician will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to support the office's mandates as outlined in State Code Sections 79-6-301 and 79-6-401.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct routine chemical and physical processing and testing on molten salt components and products by following written methods and using instruments such as a scanning electron microscope, STA (duel TGA & DSC), TMA, dilatometer, ICP-MS, LFA, rheometer, inert gas fusion analyzer, potentiostat, and complete reporting in a timely manner.
• Keep accurate experimental records and document all technical records in lab book or electronic notebook and in compliance with standard operating procedures, lab quality system, and related standards.
• Prepare and present results with external public and private research teams, and support research efforts
• Demonstrate competency in testing and pass proficiency testing.
• Support the need of lab equipment maintenance, calibration, and related documentation.
• Support receiving of laboratory supplies and maintaining inventory database.
• Qualify and maintain proficiency in Radiological Control program and handle radioactive materials per written procedures
• Apply engineering knowledge to assess current systems and provide engineering solutions to reduce risk and improve reliability, operating performance, and system efficiency
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• You will need to pass a beryllium sensitivity blood test.
• Conduct a variety of analytical tests and basic experiments with precision and accuracy to support research projects.
• Ensure the laboratory environment adheres to high standards of cleanliness, safety, and organization.
• Assist in the creation, implementation, and documentation of Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Stay updated with industry trends, new techniques, and technologies to continually improve laboratory practices and procedures.
• Ensure all laboratory activities comply with relevant regulatory standards and institutional policies.
• Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate repairs as necessary
• Accurately record, analyze, and report experimental data, maintaining detailed and organized laboratory notebooks and electronic records.
