Job description

Interested in joining a growing company where you will work with talented colleagues, enhance a supportive and energetic culture, and be part of the climate solution? At Energy Solutions, we focus on the big impacts. And we believe that market-based programs can be a powerful force to deliver large-scale energy, carbon, and water-use savings. Since 1995, we’ve harnessed that power to offer proven, performance-based solutions for our utility, government, and institutional customers.

We are currently seeking a full-time Energy Engineer I to join our Policy & Ratings team. Our Policy & Ratings Team supports the development of building codes, product standards, and other policies through a data-driven analytical approach. The person selected to fill this position shall have knowledge of building science, decarbonization, energy-efficient technologies, energy codes and standards, and energy modeling. Knowledge of HVAC and industrial systems is especially sought after, together with knowledge of grid harmonization technologies, demand response, and distributed generation. Knowledge of data science techniques and programming languages, including Python, Ruby, Perl, or R is a plus.

As a member of the Energy Solutions P&R team, you will have a broad impact on state and national energy codes, and energy efficiency markets through our work for major North American utilities, state and local governments, and other national leaders in energy efficiency policy. This unique opportunity, paired with Energy Solutions’ mission-driven approach, creates a perfect environment for individuals who want to have an active voice in shaping the energy future in North America and beyond. Other benefits include a diverse and inclusive team culture, mentorship and career growth opportunities, collaboration on projects that matter, the ability to express your creativity and unique perspective, and learn and grow with the latest industry tools.

Daily responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Analysis of zero-carbon and energy-efficient technologies in the context of energy policy, including aspects such as the development of product technical potential and feasibility, energy savings, cost-effectiveness, code compliance, and market barriers.
  • Perform building energy modeling using physics engines such as EnergyPlus and apply statistical methods and other post-processing analyses (including data analysis and scripting) to results.
  • Help craft long-term market transformation strategies intended to accelerate the market adoption rate of zero-carbon and energy-efficient measures and technologies.
  • Support senior engineering staff to develop product testing plans, oversee testing regimens at accredited test labs, and perform analysis on test results for product categories undergoing standards updates.
  • Write reports on technical topics in support of codes and standards rulemakings (e.g., Title 24 CASE Reports, federal appliance standards advocacy comment letters), proposals to change test methods and minimum energy performance standards proposals, code readiness and emerging technology studies, and other public-facing documents.
  • Work with team members to engage with industry stakeholders to advance product efficiency goals through codes and standards rulemakings.
  • Support our team in preparing for and participating in public hearings, at the state and national level as well as meetings of national stakeholder groups/working groups and industry committees.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A technical bachelor’s degree with a preference towards mechanical, industrial, electrical, or environmental engineering.
  • A minimum of 2 years of work experience in engineering or in a related area.
  • Knowledge of Title 24, ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, and other energy codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports, technical papers, and provide technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences.
  • Experience with data analysis, scripting, and large-scale simulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to conduct occasional business travel.

Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes a generous retirement package. Energy Solutions provides an excellent benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, other pre-tax contribution plans, and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
