Job summary

Maryland Public Service Commission invites applications for an Assistant General Counsel to deliver legal and policy guidance on energy regulation and related utility matters. The Office of General Counsel supports the Commission through litigation, rulemakings, and adjudicatory proceedings.

The role requires a JD, Maryland Bar admission, and strong writing and advocacy skills. A Special Appointment is offered with duties across state and federal regulatory work and ethics compliance.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a Juris Doctorate from ABA-accredited law school.
  • Must be admitted to the Maryland Bar.
  • Valid authorization to work in the U.S. and a valid driver’s license are required.
  • Strong writing and oral advocacy skills are essential for the duties.

Responsibilities

  • Provide analysis, advice and support to the Commission on various regulatory matters.
  • Coordinate with senior advisors and experts on applications, filings and pleadings.
  • Draft Commission orders that are well-researched and barrier-free against appeals.
  • Litigate cases in state and federal courts and argue before appellate bodies.
  • Provide oral and written briefings on matters of interest to the Commission.
  • Address customer complaints and Public Information Act requests.
  • Uphold high professional ethics and handle confidential data.
