Job summary

Greater Austin YMCA is seeking a Group Exercise Instructor to teach engaging classes, prioritize safety, and support members in achieving fitness goals. You will uphold health standards, guide participants through demonstrations, and promote YMCA programs within a welcoming environment.

The role emphasizes teamwork, clear communication, and a growth mindset, with opportunities to lead and co-teach sessions and contribute to a positive, inclusive culture.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must have beginner level fitness skills (0–1 year) and audition before teaching.
• Nationally recognized certification in a specialty area (YMCA Group Exercise, Indoor Cycling, Zumba, etc.).
• Current First Aid/ CPR certifications preferred (obtained within 30 days of employment).

Responsibilities

• Protect health, safety, and welfare of all participants by keeping fitness areas safe.
• Encourage members to learn benefits of exercise and inform about other programs.
• Answer questions and address fitness-related concerns of members.
• Lead and/or co-teach individual or group classes as designated by the supervisor.
• Arrive 7-10 minutes before class starts and be prepared to start on time.
• Submit proper maintenance requests for repairs and maintenance of fitness equipment.
• Secure own substitute if unable to attend scheduled shift.
• Judge the appropriate level for all participants.
• Set up and put away equipment as needed.
• Follow YMCA Health & Wellness Program objectives and policies.
• Follow Greater Austin YMCA's People Guidelines, Code of Ethics, payroll procedures, and emergency procedures.
• Render first aid as needed and complete incident/accident reports for injuries.
• Attend required meetings and trainings.
• Support the Center and Association goals through task completion and presence.
• Lead by example the Y's mission, vision, and values with participants and staff.
• Become an Ambassador of the Y's work and culture.
• Complete other duties as assigned.
