Job summary

Salem Regional Medical Center is seeking a part-time EMT/PCA in the Emergency Department. The role supports patient care under RN supervision, handling data collection, routine procedures, and age-diverse patient needs.

The position requires STNA/PCA/Medical Assistant training or nursing coursework, an Ohio EMT license, and BCLS certification, with strong teamwork in a high-energy ED setting.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma preferred but not required.
  • STNA, PCA, Medical Assistant training or nursing program coursework accepted.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification required.
  • Active EMT license from Ohio Board of EMS or equivalent.

  • Assist with data collection and procedures within scope of practice.

  • Support unit secretary tasks in the ED like calls, orders, and records.

Position: Part Time EMT/PCA , LPN, or PCA

Department: ED

Shift: 0.4-0.8 FTE, 11a-11p, 3p-3a

Purpose

The EMT/PCA, under the direction of the RN, performs various patient care activities for assigned patients that fall within their scope of practice. In caring for a patient population which may include the newborn, toddler, adolescent, adult and the elderly, the EMT/PCA assists with data collection and performance of procedures that address each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs. The EMT/PCA collaborates with other members of the health care team to provide an organized and effective plan of care.

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Unit Secretary organizes and coordinates the clerical activities and communication of the Emergency Department by:

  • Answering the telephone and patient communication system.
  • Receiving and transmitting messages via the computer.
  • Transcribing physician orders.
  • Maintaining patients’ records.
  • Greeting, directing, and giving appropriate factual information to patients, visitors, and personnel from other departments.

Under the supervision of the Unit Director or as directed by the Registered Nurse, performs various patient care activities and related services in caring for the needs and comfort of patients in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures. The patient population to whom care is delivered may include newborns, toddlers, adolescents, adults, and the elderly.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma preferred but not required. Ability to speak, read, and basic math skills required.
  • Must have completed an approved curriculum for State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA) training, and passed the Nurse Aide competency tests for written/oral and clinical skills; or completed the SRMC Patient Care Assistant training course; or completed a Medical Assistant curriculum; or completed the first semester of the physical assessment course in the Nursing Program. After hire, maintaining PCA competencies will be done through skills lab, observation, and written exams, etc.
  • Must have or obtain certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (maintains currency of certification).
  • Must possess a current license as an EMT from the Ohio State Board of Emergency Medical, Fire, and Transportation Services
  • Can demonstrate knowledge regarding the care of the acutely ill patient via current experience with an Emergency Medical Transport Service
