Job summary

Harborview Medical Center seeks a Medical Interpreter 1, Spanish to support patient access to care on the day shift. You will provide interpretation across clinical encounters, enabling direct communication between patients and providers and handling cross-cultural nuances.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent with two years of interpretation in a clinic or hospital setting and a medical interpreter certification or qualification from WA DSHS, NBCMI, or CCH.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent and two years interpretation experience in a clinic or hospital setting.
• Medical interpreter certification or qualification from Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters.
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Responsibilities

• Provide oral, sight and written interpretation for target language(s).
• Transmit information accurately between patient and provider or staff.
• Encourage direct communication between patient and provider or staff.
• Manage complexity of cross-cultural encounter.
• Provide sight translation in the presence of a provider and/or other medical staff.
• Assist patients to complete medical, financial, or other forms.
