Job summary

Harborview Medical Center’s Interpreter Services Department in Seattle seeks a Medical Interpreter 1, Spanish, to support patient access to care. The role is 40 hours weekly on the day shift, within a team dedicated to language access and high-quality patient communication.

Responsibilities include interpreting verbally, in writing, and sight translation, transmitting information accurately between patient and staff, and assisting patients with forms.

Qualifications

• High school graduation and two years of interpretation experience in a clinic or hospital setting.
• Certification or qualification from WA DSHS, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or the CCHI.
• Equivalent education/experience may substitute for minimum qualifications where no legal license is required.

Responsibilities

• Provide oral, sight and written interpretation for target language(s).
• Transmit information accurately between patient and provider or staff.
• Encourage direct communication between patient and provider or staff.
• Manage complexity of cross-cultural encounter.
• Provide sight translation in the presence of a provider and/or other medical staff.
• Assist patients to complete medical, financial, or other forms.
