Job summary

VEG DC is seeking a per diem Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join our fast-paced hospital team. You will support the clinical workflow, triage patients, assist with treatments, and help ensure compassionate care for pets and peace of mind for their owners.

You’ll work with credentialed technicians and doctors, gain hands-on experience in anesthesia, diagnostics, and emergency procedures, and grow your career with guided pathways and training opportunities.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Enrolled in AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program a plus.
• 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role; emergency experience bonus.
• Basic computer skills and EMR software familiarity.
• Excellent communicator with pet parents and team.
• Ability to lift up to 25 kg; work in a noisy environment.

Responsibilities

• Be the first warm welcome and a steady support, triaging incoming patients and guiding them toward care.
• Assist with treatments, nursing care, and diagnostics, including bloodwork, imaging, catheter placement, and oxygen support.
• Work with credentialed technicians and veterinarians to set up and monitor anesthesia and sedation cases.
• Set up and manage IV fluids, blood transfusions, and medication administration.
• Assist during every moment of care: outpatient or inpatient, exam room to treatment area.
• Join patient rounds and stay close to the clinical picture for continuity of care.
• Learn CPR and RECOVER Certified Rescuer training (provided).
• Grow into advanced responsibilities like anesthesia support, ultrasound, and catheterization through training pathways.
