Overview
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Physician, the Emergency Medical Technician/Unit Secretary functions as a member of the patient care team to provide care to a designated group of patients.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
- Current EMT, CNA or Medical Assistant certification for Emergency Department required.
- Current CPR certification required.
- Maintain licensure and continuing education as appropriate for scope of practice.
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Word processing/computer application experience and knowledge desired.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Responsibilities
- Provide care to patients under the direction of a Registered Professional Nurse. Initiate suggestions to RN to clarify, alter, or individualize nursing care for changing patient needs.
- Reinforce patients’ teaching relative to presenting conditions.
- Communicate effectively with all members of the patient care team.
- Promote cooperation and teamwork between departments.
- Document care provided in the medical record accurately, timely, and in an appropriate manner according to policies & procedures.
- Provide transport and ensure safe patient care during transport utilizing appropriate protocols.
- Apply and maintain restraining devices as directed.
- Perform venipunctures to collect serum.
- Monitor suicidal patients in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Assist in all aspects of patient care as directed while maintaining patient privacy.
- Check, clean, and stock rooms with supplies and linens in preparation for daily work schedule.
- Perform equipment checks as directed, reporting all instances of malfunctioning to the nurse in charge of the department at the time the malfunction is determined.
- Perform clerical functions utilizing appropriate communication skills as directed.
- Transcribe physician orders and perform order entry accurately, efficiently, and in order of priority.
- Prepare medical records for distribution to medical records and department copies as appropriate.
- Prepare paperwork associated with patient transfer to other facilities.
