Job summary

Howard Community College seeks qualified EMS adjunct faculty to support Emergency Medical Responder, EMT, and Paramedic education through classroom, lab, simulation, and skills-based instruction.

The successful candidate will bring current clinical knowledge, judgment, and an engaging approach to adult learning while collaborating with full-time faculty and the EMS Program Director to prepare students for Maryland and national certification.

Qualifications

• Must hold current Maryland EMT certification or National Registry EMT in good standing.
• Two years of recent field/clinical experience at relevant level.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (Provider) certification.
• Ability to work with adult learners and follow program standards.
• Maintain licenses, certifications, and meet ongoing requirements.

Responsibilities

• Teach EMS content in various formats (classroom, lab, simulation, online, remote, hybrid) per course outcomes.
• Demonstrate and evaluate psychomotor skills per Maryland/NAEMSE standards.
• Facilitate realistic patient-care scenarios focusing on clinical reasoning and safety.
• Assess student performance using approved evaluation tools and provide timely feedback.
• Maintain attendance, skills verification, and grade records; meet deadlines.
• Utilize Canvas and other tech to communicate and manage course materials.
• Support an inclusive and safe learning environment for diverse students.
• Collaborate with EMS program leadership and faculty for course prep and improvement.
• Follow all safety, infection-control, and college policies.

Summary

Howard Community College seeks student-centered emergency medical services professionals to join its adjunct faculty pool. Adjunct faculty support Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, and Paramedic education through classroom, laboratory, simulation, and skills-based instruction. Assignments are made according to program needs and the instructor's credentials, experience, and availability.

The successful candidate will bring current clinical knowledge, sound professional judgment, and an engaging approach to adult learning. Adjunct faculty work collaboratively with the EMS Program Director, full-time faculty, and other instructional team members to prepare students for Maryland and national certification, safe entry-level practice, and continued professional growth.

Essential Role Responsibilities

• Teach assigned EMS content in classroom, laboratory, simulation, online, remote, or hybrid formats, consistent with course outcomes and direction provided by the EMS Program Director or course lead.


• Demonstrate and evaluate psychomotor skills using current Maryland EMS protocols, national educational standards, program policies, and accepted evidence-based practices.


• Facilitate realistic patient-care scenarios and debriefings that promote clinical reasoning, communication, teamwork, professionalism, and patient safety.


• Assess student performance using program-approved evaluation tools; provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback.


• Maintain accurate attendance, skills-verification, assessment, and grade records, and submit required documentation by established deadlines.


• Use Canvas and other instructional technologies to access course materials, communicate with students and faculty, and complete assigned instructional tasks.


• Support a respectful, inclusive, and psychologically safe learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds and levels of EMS experience.


• Model ethical behavior, professional communication, cultural humility, and appropriate patient advocacy.


• Collaborate with faculty and staff in course preparation, equipment readiness, scenario development, student remediation, program evaluation, and continuous improvement.


• Follow college, division, program, laboratory, infection-control, and safety requirements.


• Maintain all licenses, certifications, and continuing-education requirements applicable to assigned duties, and provide updated documentation when requested.


• Complete required college onboarding, compliance training, meetings, and professional development.


• Perform other instructional duties related to the assignment as directed.

High School or equivalent

Experience Required

• Current Maryland or National Registry EMT certification in good standing, or current Maryland certification/licensure at a higher EMS clinician level.


• For paramedic-level instructional assignments: current Maryland paramedic certification or licensure in good standing or current National Registry Paramedic certification, unless an equivalent qualification is approved by the program and permitted by applicable standards.


• At least two years of recent field or clinical experience at the certification level relevant to the assigned content.


• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider certification, or an equivalent credential accepted by the program. For paramedic-level instructional assignments: ACLS and PALS AHA certifications


• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, accept feedback, and support students in a structured learning environment.


• Ability to complete required instructional preparation or orientation before independently performing assigned duties.


• Pre-employment criminal background investigation is a condition of employment.


• Employment is contingent upon verification of required certifications, licensure, education, and other qualifications. Selected candidates must provide documentation upon request.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

• Three or more years of recent EMS field experience, with ongoing clinical practice or recent operational involvement.


• Previous teaching, precepting, field training, simulation, or skills-evaluation experience with adult learners.


• Maryland Instructor Certification Review Board (MICRB) instructor certification, MFRI instructor credential, NAEMSE instructor education, or comparable formal preparation in adult education.


• Associate, bachelor's, or graduate degree in EMS, health sciences, education, or a related field.


• Current instructor credentials in one or more relevant disciplines, such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, AMLS, or PEPP.


• Experience with Canvas or another learning management system and comfort using simulation, audiovisual, and classroom technologies.


• Experience teaching or practicing within the Maryland EMS system and familiarity with current MIEMSS protocols.


• Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse student populations in a community college, workforce, or public-safety education setting.

Physical Demand Summary

The position requires the sensory and physical abilities necessary to communicate effectively and to demonstrate, observe, and evaluate EMS procedures in classroom, laboratory, and simulation settings. Duties may include prolonged standing and walking; bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions; assisting with patient movement demonstrations; and moving or positioning EMS equipment, training manikins, stretchers, and related materials. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
