Job summary

County Emergency Communications is seeking Emergency Medical Dispatchers to handle urgent medical calls, gather patient and incident details, establish response priorities, and support coordination of EMS resources.

Depending on training and assignment, dispatchers may provide instructions before responders arrive, follow protocols, and may work overnight or rotating schedules with overtime.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma or recognized equivalent is commonly required.
• Emergency Medical Dispatcher certification before appointment may be required.
• CPR certification and additional coursework may be required.

Responsibilities

• Receive calls involving illness, injury, and other medical emergencies
• Confirm the patient’s location, callback number, and access details
• Ask approved questions about the patient’s condition
• Determine response priority through the authorized medical dispatch system
• Dispatch or coordinate ambulance resources when included in the assignment
• Provide protocol-based instructions within current qualifications
• Relay patient information and scene hazards to responding personnel
• Document call processing and participate in quality-review activities
