Job summary

Howard University Hospital's Emergency Department leadership seeks an Assistant Nurse Manager to oversee daily operations in a Level I Trauma Center, partnering with the Nurse Manager to ensure safe, patient-centered care and regulatory compliance.

The ANM will lead a high-acuity team, coordinate staffing, supervise staff, and drive performance, with emphasis on EMTALA compliance, trauma standards, and quality initiatives in collaboration with physicians, EMS, and leadership.

Qualifications

BSN preferred; must obtain BSN within 3 years of assuming ANM.
Current, active DC RN license.
Minimum 2 years emergency nursing experience.
Experience in trauma or high-acuity emergency settings preferred.
Minimum 1 year supervisory or leadership experience required.
Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
National specialty certification (CEN preferred) within 1 year of hire.
Demonstrated leadership, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution skills.
Strong knowledge of EMTALA, trauma standards, and patient safety regulations.

Responsibilities

Implement daily Emergency Department operations, aligning staffing and resources to patient acuity, trauma volume, and throughput demands.
Monitor triage effectiveness, EMS intake coordination, and trauma activation processes.
Supervise and coach nursing staff; assist with performance evaluations and improvement plans.
Support recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of emergency nursing staff.
Ensure compliance with EMTALA, trauma standards, and regulatory requirements.
Promote evidence-based emergency and trauma nursing practice.
Support quality initiatives related to sepsis, stroke, STEMI, and trauma outcomes.
Facilitate communication between nursing staff, trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, EMS, pharmacy, and hospital leadership.
Address operational or clinical issues that may impact emergent care delivery in real time.
Report and escalated significant events, near misses, and patient safety concerns appropriately.
