Job summary

Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC seeks an Assistant Nurse Manager – Emergency Department to provide clinical and operational leadership in a Level I trauma center. You will partner with the Nurse Manager to ensure safe, efficient, evidence-based care and regulatory compliance in a high-acuity ED.

You will lead daily ED operations, supervise nursing staff, and support recruitment and onboarding while ensuring EMTALA compliance and trauma standards.

Qualifications

• Current RN license in DC; BSN preferred, must obtain BSN within 3 years.
• Minimum 2 years in Emergency Nursing; trauma/high-acuity preferred.
• At least 1 year supervisory/leadership experience required.
• BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required; CEN preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily ED operations, align staffing with acuity and trauma load.
• Oversee triage, EMS coordination, and trauma activation.
• Supervise nurses; support performance evaluations and coaching.
• Assist with recruitment, interviewing, onboarding of ED staff.
• Ensure EMTALA compliance and trauma surveillance.
• Promote evidence-based emergency/trauma nursing practice.
• Support quality initiatives for sepsis, stroke, STEMI, trauma outcomes.
• Coordinate with trauma surgeons, ED physicians, EMS, pharmacy, leadership.
• Address real-time operational or clinical issues impacting care.
• Report significant events and patient safety concerns.
