Job summary

Howard University Hospital is seeking an Assistant Nurse Manager for the Medical Surgical Cardiology unit (4 North) in Washington, DC. The role leads the night shift, ensures patient-centered cardiac care, and coordinates with cardiology and hospital teams to maintain safety and quality.

The ANM will supervise staff, assist with recruitment, ensure compliance with telemetry protocols, and advocate evidence-based practice while supporting discharge planning and staff development.

Qualifications

• BSN preferred; must obtain BSN within 3 years if not yet obtained.
• Active RN license in DC at time of hire.
• Minimum 2 years clinical experience in Med-Surg/Cardiology/Telemetry or related.
• Experience with cardiac monitoring and arrhythmia recognition preferred.
• Minimum 1 year supervisory or leadership experience.
• Current BLS certification.
• ACLS certification preferred.
• National specialty certification within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provide onsite night shift leadership and oversight for 4 North operations.
• Align staffing and assignments to patient acuity, telemetry demands, and census fluctuations.
• Supervise, coach, and mentor nursing staff; assist with evaluations and improvement plans.
• Support recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of medical-surgical cardiology staff.
• Ensure regulatory compliance and telemetry monitoring protocols.
• Promote evidence-based cardiac and medical-surgical nursing practice.
• Support quality initiatives related to monitoring accuracy, fall/infection prevention, and throughput.
• Collaborate with cardiologists, hospitalists, case management, pharmacy, and ancillary teams for safe discharge planning.
• Address operational or clinical issues impacting safe patient care in real time.
• Report significant events promptly (arrhythmias, near misses, adverse events, concerns).
