Job summary

Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC seeks a Director of the Emergency Department to provide strategic and operational leadership for one of the region's busiest emergency care environments.

Reporting to the Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), you will own clinical operations, patient throughput, quality and patient safety, regulatory compliance, financial performance, and staff development — while building collaborative partnerships with physicians, nursing, Trauma Services,

Qualifications

• BSN degree required; MSN/Healthcare Administration within 2 years of hire.
• DC RN license required; active BLS/ACLS/PALS/TNCC.
• National nursing leadership or emergency nursing certification within 1 year.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Emergency Department.
• Oversee patient throughput, triage, LOS, boarding and throughput improvements.
• Foster professional practice and staff engagement with governance.
• Performance appraisals, development, recruitment, and retention support.
• Ensure EMTALA, JCAHO, CMS, DC DOH compliance and survey readiness.
• Manage budget, staffing, resources, and department finances.
• Lead quality, safety, experience initiatives and surge preparedness.
