Job summary

Brown University Health Taunton is seeking an Emergency Department Technician (ED Tech) / Unit Clerk to support nurses and providers in a high-volume emergency department. The role includes clinical tasks such as EKGs, finger-stick glucose, phlebotomy, and assisting with procedures, while ensuring clear communication with patients and families.

The position emphasizes multitasking, teamwork, and patient-centered care, with responsibilities spanning both clinical and clerical duties.

Qualifications

• Two or more years of related experience and/or training in the health care setting preferred.
• Experience as an ED Tech or other role within the health care setting, inpatient or outpatient preferred.
• Is cooperative in interactions, treating customers with courtesy, respect, and compassion.
• Is patient when responding to questions and answers questions appropriately.
• Knowledge of basic anatomy/physiology.
• Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Skilled in multi-tasking and ability to prioritize.
• Comfortable with use of computers and telephones.

Responsibilities

• Assists with patient assessment and care provision (under the direction of the registered nurse).
• Demonstrate ability to organize and multitask in a fast-paced emergency setting to support the timely flow and delivery of quality patient care.
• Perform tasks based on confirmed competency including EKGs, finger stick blood glucose testing and phlebotomy; assist with procedures.
• Assists patients in meeting nutritional and elimination needs.
• Assist in care of critically ill/injured patients and act as primary runner to obtain supplies and equipment, assisting in CPR/compressions.
• Safely place patients on monitors and assist in safe lifting of patients.
• Provide customer service; respond to patient call bells and questions; round the department for patient needs.
• Restock patient care rooms with linen and supplies; ensure bedside boards are up to date; prepare rooms for housekeeping.
• Monitor oxygen supply and restock specialty carts (ENT and Suture carts) as needed.
• Communicate clearly with team, providers, departments, patients and families.
• Assist with hourly rounding and respond to increased acuity or census as needed.
• Demonstrate willingness to learn and adapt to changing healthcare environment.
• Perform clerical duties as assigned; perform other duties as requested.
