Job summary

The City of Ottumwa is inviting applications for the 911 Communications Specialist. This civilian role serves as the first point of contact for police, fire, or EMS requests, interpreting and processing calls and coordinating dispatch using multiple systems.

You will work closely with the on‑duty patrol supervisor to ensure timely emergency responses. Requirements include being 18+, HS diploma/GED, and relevant certifications within specified timeframes.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience dealing with the public in stressful situations.
• Certification in NCIC/NLETS and Iowa Online Warrants within 6 months of appointment.
• Completion of 40‑hour basic tele-communicator school within 12 months.

Responsibilities

• Receive and process incoming calls for police, fire, or EMS.
• Coordinate dispatch of public safety units using dispatch systems.
• Relay critical information accurately.
• Work with on‑duty patrol supervisor for effective emergency response.
