Job summary

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) seeks a Coordinator (Communications) to support statewide tactical communications planning, operations, and evaluation under the Tactical Communications Unit.

This permanent, full-time role requires managing assigned tactical communications projects, ensuring Cal OES communication systems are operational, and performing emergency response activities as directed.

Qualifications

  • Radio communications knowledge—Familiarity with public-safety radio systems, VHF/UHF, trunked radio systems, satellite communications, repeaters, and radio interoperability.
  • Emergency communications experience—Experience supporting communications during disasters, emergencies, large events, or incident response.
  • Technical troubleshooting—Ability to diagnose communication failures, configure equipment, identify coverage problems, and coordinate repairs or technical support.
  • Documentation and reporting—Ability to maintain communications plans, equipment inventories, deployment records, situation reports, and after-action documentation.
  • Field deployment experience—Willingness and ability to deploy to disaster areas, potentially on short notice and under difficult conditions.
  • Professional judgment under pressure—Ability to make sound decisions when communications infrastructure is degraded and information is incomplete.

Responsibilities

  • Supports statewide tactical communications planning, operations, and evaluation during routine and emergency conditions.
  • Coordinates statewide interoperability efforts, supports emergency communications response and recovery, develops regulatory and planning guidance.
  • Provides technical assistance to Cal OES branches, regions, and partner agencies.
