Job summary

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking an entry‑level Public Safety Dispatcher to handle 911 calls and dispatch multiple agencies.

The role involves answering both emergency and routine lines, logging calls in CAD, and coordinating with fire, EMS, and law enforcement per protocols. Candidates must be 18+, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and complete CritiCall testing, typing, hearing/vision exams, and a thorough background check.

Qualifications

• Must pass Public Safety Dispatcher pre-employment (CritiCall) examinations with a passing score validated by CritiCall process.
• Must be able to pass a typing test with a score validated by CritiCall process.
• Successfully pass a hearing and vision exam.
• Negative drug screen.
• Successfully pass extensive background investigation with favorable results.
• Successfully pass a psychological fitness examination with favorable results.

Responsibilities

• Answers 911 emergency calls using in-depth questioning and call-taking procedures.
• Answers administrative phone lines and dispatches appropriate agencies.
• Receives and dispatches calls for the Sheriff’s Office; evaluates requests and sends appropriate response.
• Dispatches fire, EMS, or law enforcement according to established protocols.
• Maintains knowledge of local geography and uses mapping tools to direct responders.
• Logs all information into the CAD system and provides details to responding units.
