Job summary

Heaviside Industries, based in Los Angeles, CA, seeks an experienced embedded software engineer to develop robust C/C++ on real-time Linux and RTOS targets. You will work closely with electrical and systems engineers to bring prototype capabilities to production, building interfaces to sensors, radios, actuators, and cameras while validating on bench and in the field.

The role emphasizes cross-functional collaboration, expertise in embedded systems, and a passion for autonomy.

Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in C and C++, with practical Python for tooling, automation or system integration.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded Linux and RTOS, cross-compilation, debugging at HW/SW boundary.
  • Knowledge of UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet, and basic network programming.
  • Experience integrating sensors, radios, actuators into production or field systems.
  • Git, code review, and collaborative software-development workflows.
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity within a small, fast-moving team.
  • Bonus: Nix/NixOS for reproducible environments.
  • Bonus: Oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD tooling.
  • Bonus: ROS, autonomy, controls, simulation, or HW bring-up experience.
  • Bonus: SDK/library/interface development for internal teams.
  • U.S. Person as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.62)

Responsibilities

  • Write robust C, C++, and Python for real-time, resource-constrained environments on Linux/RTOS.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, RF, and systems engineers to move capabilities from prototype to production.
  • Design and maintain software for autonomous systems, including embedded software and ground tools.
  • Build software interfaces to sensors, radios, actuators, cameras, and hardware; validate on bench and field.
  • Develop simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and automated test infrastructure for rapid iteration.
  • Support integration campaigns and field tests, debugging live hardware and implementing fixes.
  • Contribute to fast engineering practices: code review, CI, and pragmatic documentation.
