Job summary

Virginia Tech is seeking a Mental Health Professional to join the Cook Counseling Center and embedded within Residential Well-being. You will assess students, provide individual, couples, and group therapy, and support crisis interventions during after-hours on-call.

The position offers a 12-month regular appointment with a base salary of about $58,000–$66,000 plus benefits, and an on-campus apartment is available as part of the compensation package.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in clinical/counseling psychology or social work required.
  • Licensed or license-eligible in Virginia for LPC/LCSW with supervision potential.
  • Experience in focused therapeutic interventions within a multidisciplinary team.

Job Description

We’re currently searching for a Mental Health Professional to join our counseling team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission. The Residential Well-being (RWB) model at Virginia Tech is an innovative, wrap-around approach to inclusion, belonging, and mental health support in the campus environment.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ROLE:

1) You’ll be joining the Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center team, a department committed to a spirit of excellence in providing timely and relevant university mental health services. You will be an embedded counselor in the department of Residential Well-being. 2) You’ll be reporting to the Director and RWB coordinator in a regular twelve-month, 100% administrative professional appointment. 3) You’ll coordinate with the managing directors for the campus community. 4) You’ll be responsible for supporting students in the Cook Counseling Center and in the residence halls by providing individual services to students, including initial assessment and treatment planning, individual, couples, and group psychotherapy; conducting crisis interventions and backup for our after-hours on-call service. 5) You'll provide outreach and trainings to the residential well-being staff, outreach to students in the university community and ongoing therapy with residential students. 6) You’ll work 2-11 pm Monday through Thursday and 8-5 on Friday. Weekly meetings will include Cook Counseling staff meetings, small group supervision, as well as various RWB meetings. 7) You’ll be offered a base compensation package between $58,000 - $60,000 with an on-campus apartment or $64,000- $66,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package which includes health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and so much more!

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in clinical or counseling psychology or social work
  • Licensed or licensed-eligible in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a licensed professional counselor or licensed clinical social worker. Supervision may be provided with a goal of licensure within 1-2 years from start date of employment, depending on degree and licensure requirements.
  • Experience in providing focused therapeutic interventions within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Supervised experience in a mental health setting. Experience providing group psychotherapy.
  • Experience with managing crisis situations, completing risk assessments, and disposition planning to address safety risks.
  • Well-developed counseling and clinical supervision skills.
  • A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice.
  • The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues with acceptance, respect, and trust
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest and experience working with underrepresented students and international students.
  • Experience working in a college counseling center
  • Experience working with Housing/Residence Life.
  • Experience with outreach and educational programming.
