Job summary

Newport News Public Schools is seeking an Elementary Assistant Principal for the 2026-2027 school year. You will assist the principal in planning, organizing, administering and managing an elementary school, including supervising staff, maintaining a safe environment, monitoring curriculum and budgeting.

Qualifications

• Must possess a Master’s degree and be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in administration and supervision.
• Must possess at least three years of successful teaching experience at the elementary level.
• Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of current issues, principles, and practices in public elementary education and the ability to apply them to a school.
• Must possess knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development, instructional practices, interpretation of test data, and budget development.

Responsibilities

• Assist the school principal in the general administration of the school.
• Assist with interpreting and enforcing school board policies and regulations.
• Assist in developing, administering, and evaluating the elementary school curriculum and instructional programs.
• Assist with supervising and monitoring student attendance, counseling, and pupil services.
• Coordinate transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services at the assigned school.
• Coordinate standardized student-testing programs in the school.
• Counsel students and administer disciplinary action when necessary.
• Confer with parents regarding discipline and academic achievement.
