Job summary

West Ottawa Public Schools is seeking a Long-Term Substitute Elementary Resource Teacher to support students with disabilities under IEPs. You will provide reading, writing, and math instruction in various settings, monitor progress, and collaborate with general and special education staff to ensure continuity of services.

The role requires a valid Michigan teaching certificate, Elementary Education ZA endorsement, and Michigan Special Education endorsements (SM, SV, SC).

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized instruction and support to students with IEPs.

  • Teach reading, writing, and mathematics in small groups or resource settings.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support academic and behavioral needs.
  • Follow instructional plans and progress-monitoring systems for consistency.
  • Collect and document student progress and communicate concerns to special education staff.
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to student services and IEP implementation.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and student support meetings as appropriate.
  • Build positive relationships with students and maintain an inclusive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with special education staff, general education teachers, and families.

Job description

Position: Long-Term Substitute Elementary Resource Teacher

Posting Dates: August 18, 2026 Until Filled

Reports To: Sheldon Woods Elementary School Principal

Beginning: 09/21/2026

Ending: 12/11/2026

Qualifications

  • Must be registered with EDUStaff, LLC
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate required.
  • Elementary Education endorsement (ZA), Valid Michigan Special Education endorsement (SM, SV, SC)
Responsibilities
  • Provide specialized instruction and support to students receiving special education services in accordance with their IEPs.
  • Implement existing IEP goals, accommodations, modifications, and specially designed instruction.
  • Provide instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics through small-group, individual, push-in, and/or resource settings.
  • Collaborate closely with general education teachers to support students' academic and behavioral needs.
  • Follow established instructional plans, interventions, and progress-monitoring systems to provide consistency for students.
  • Collect and document student progress data and communicate concerns or changes in student performance to the appropriate special education staff.
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to student services, progress monitoring, and IEP implementation.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and student support meetings as appropriate during the assignment.
  • Build positive relationships with students and maintain a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with special education staff, general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families.
  • Support students in developing academic, organizational, executive functioning, and self-advocacy skills.
  • Utilize assessment and progress-monitoring data to adjust instruction and provide appropriate student support.
  • Maintain consistent routines, expectations, and instructional practices throughout the long-term assignment.
  • Communicate regularly with the building special education team to ensure continuity of services.
  • Participate in building and district professional learning and staff meetings as appropriate.
Other Information
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students with diverse learning needs.
  • Experience providing small-group or individualized academic instruction.
  • Knowledge of IEPs, accommodations, modifications, and progress monitoring.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students and maintain a consistent, structured learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with general education and special education teams.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken words; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • The worker is subject to environmental conditions.
  • The worker should provide consistent and reliable, and in-person attendance.
