Solon Elementary and Garret Schenck School

RSU 74, a small, rural school district located in central Maine, is seeking a dynamic, student-focused educational leader to serve as Principal of two small Pre-K to Grade 5 buildings. This is an exciting opportunity for a committed leader to make a lasting impact in two close-knit school communities.

Position Overview

The Principal will split time between both elementary schools, providing instructional leadership, supporting students and staff, and fostering a positive school culture. In our high-poverty district, student attendance and a high percentage of the Special Education population are ongoing challenges. The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding of early childhood education and a proven ability to lead school improvement efforts using data-informed decision making. As well, this principal will be a part of a small administrative team that is committed to educational excellence Pre-K to 12. Through the team process, decisions are made that will produce, implement, and assess the effectiveness of plans intended to foster growth and achievement in the classroom, and support educators in their efforts to implement instructional strategies that aid in effective implementation of the educational plans for the district/schools. This leader will work with their two staffs to address building specific needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support PreK–5 teaching and learning across two buildings.
  • Use student data to drive instructional decisions and monitor progress.
  • Collaborate with highly dedicated school staff who take ownership of school operations, especially when the principal is off-site.
  • Build strong relationships with students, families, and community members.
  • Promote strategies to improve student attendance and engagement.
  • Support inclusive practices and programming for a student population with a higher-than-average number of IEPs.
  • Work with the administrative team to strategize and plan through goals to foster growth.
Qualifications
  • Maine building administrator certification (040) or eligibility.
  • Experience in early childhood or elementary education required.
  • Demonstrated success in leading data-informed instructional improvement.
  • Understanding of the unique strengths and challenges of rural schools.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
