Under supervision, technicians may lead lower-level electricians, train staff, and supervise inmate crews in a correctional environment, ensuring safety and security of work areas and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an electrician apprenticeship program plus journey-level experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshooting electrical systems and diagnosing malfunctions using testing equipment.
  • Repairs and replacement of switches, receptacles, circuit breakers, and lighting fixtures.
  • Installations of conduit and wiring for motors, generators, and transformers.
  • Perform load calculations and determine wire sizing and conduit fill.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA70E, and state regulations.
  • Inspect electrical equipment and enforce safety protocols such as LOTO and PPE.
  • Read blueprints and schematics to map circuits and installations.
  • Coordinate with facility managers and inspectors to complete projects on schedule.

Education

Completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey level electrician experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is recruiting for anElectrician I for the Facilities Management Department. Thisposition is responsible for performing journey-level skilled workin the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of a widevariety of electrical systems, wiring, distribution panels, andcontrols.

Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range ofduties described in the series concept, and in addition, at theadvanced journey level, either:

  • Function as a lead worker for lower-level Electricians on a regular basis by providing training and technical assistance,assigning and reviewing work, and providing input to performanceevaluations; or in a correctional environment, function as a lead worker for an inmate crew on a regular basis and documentinmate performance through completion of periodic performancereports. Incumbents are also responsible for implementing securityprocedures which include securing the work area from unauthorizedinmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools, andequipment.
Duties include (but are not limited to):
  • Troubleshooting: and diagnose malfunctions in complexelectrical systems, circuits, and machinery using advanced testingequipment like multimeters, amp probes, megohmmeters, and circuittracers to isolate faults quickly.
  • Repairs: Fix or replace faulty switches, receptacles, circuitbreakers, fuses, interior/exterior light fixtures, ballasts, andintegrated building distribution panels to restore power safely andminimize facility downtime.
  • Install installations: Install electrical conduit (EMT, Rigid,PVC), bend and thread piping, run new electrical wiring throughwalls and ceilings, and properly hook up commercial motors,generators, and transformers.
  • Load Calculations: Calculate electrical loads, determineappropriate wire sizing, conduit fill ratios, and circuit breakercapacities using Ohm's Law and NEC tables to prevent circuitoverloading.
  • Code Compliance: Ensure all new installations, modifications,and existing electrical systems conform strictly to the NationalElectrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA70E) standards, and state regulations
  • Inspections: Routinely inspect facility electrical equipment,subpanels, and distribution centers to proactively identify codeviolations, wear-and-tear, or potential safety hazards.
  • Safety Protocols: Follow strict OSHA safety guidelines,including the mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),arc flash safety boundaries, and standard Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)protocols before servicing any energized equipment.
  • Blueprint Reading: Interpret and work from complex technicalblueprints, wiring schematics, single-line diagrams, andarchitectural drawings to accurately trace circuits and map out newinstallations.
  • Tool & Material Management: Clean, maintain, and properlystore specialized electrical tools and testing equipment, andreport when material stock runs low.
  • Record Keeping: Document and update facility master blueprintsto reflect system modifications, log completed preventativemaintenance tasks and accurately track time and materials in a TMAwork order system.
  • Coordination: Collaborate and coordinate effectively withfacility managers, other skilled trades (HVAC, plumbing, ), andcity/state electrical inspectors to ensure projects are completedseamlessly and on schedule.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship programfollowed by one year of journey level electrician experience; OR anequivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A valid Class \"C\" driver's license at the time of appointmentand as a condition of continuing employment.
  • A valid Journeyman Electrician License / Certification (orrelevant state/municipal electrical credential)OR an equivalentcombination of education and experience

Please Note: Positions in this class provide assistance to higher-level staff in determining air conditioning and refrigeration needs and are distinguished from positions at thelower level by lead worker responsibilities that require judgmentsand decisions of a supervisory nature and the independence withwhich duties are performed. This position requires travel betweenall main campuses and satellite campuses.

Weekly Schedule

Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

Salary Information

CBA A, E, F Grade 32, Step 1 - $59,508.00

*This position is contingent upon ongoing and availablefunding.

Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initialappointments for classified positions typically begin at Step1.
