Job summary

The College of Southern Nevada is seeking an Electrician I in the Facilities Management Department to perform journey-level electrical work across campus facilities, including installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, wiring, panels, and controls.

This role may lead other electricians, provide training, and coordinate work with campus managers while following NEC/NFPA 70E safety standards and Lockout/Tagout procedures. Travel between main and satellite campuses is required.

  • Completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey level electrician experience.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Troubleshooting complex electrical systems using advanced testing equipment.
  • Repair of switches, receptacles, breakers, fuses, and light fixtures to restore power.
  • Install electrical conduit and run wiring for commercial equipment.
  • Perform load calculations and select wiring and breaker sizes per NEC.
  • Inspect electrical systems to ensure safety and code compliance.
  • Coordinate with facility managers and inspectors to complete projects on schedule.

Position Summary

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is recruiting for an Electrician I for the Facilities Management Department. This position is responsible for performing journey‑level skilled work in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of electrical systems, wiring, distribution panels, and controls. Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept, and in addition, at the advanced journey level, either: Function as a lead worker for lower-level Electricians on a regular basis by providing training and technical assistance, assigning and reviewing work, and providing input to performance evaluations; or in a correctional environment, function as a lead worker for an inmate crew on a regular basis and document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports. Incumbents are also responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area from unauthorized inmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools, and equipment.

Duties
  • Troubleshooting: and diagnose malfunctions in complex electrical systems, circuits, and machinery using advanced testing equipment like multimeters, amp probes, megohmmeters, and circuit tracers to isolate faults quickly.
  • Repairs: Fix or replace faulty switches, receptacles, circuit breakers, fuses, interior/exterior light fixtures, ballasts, and integrated building distribution panels to restore power safely and minimize facility downtime.
  • Install installations: Install electrical conduit (EMT, Rigid, PVC), bend and thread piping, run new electrical wiring through walls and ceilings, and properly hook up commercial motors, generators, and transformers.
  • Load Calculations: Calculate electrical loads, determine appropriate wire sizing, conduit fill ratios, and circuit breaker capacities using Ohm's Law and NEC tables to prevent circuit overloading.
  • Code Compliance: Ensure all new installations, modifications, and existing electrical systems conform strictly to the National Electrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 70E) standards, and state regulations.
  • Inspections: Routinely inspect facility electrical equipment, subpanels, and distribution centers to proactively identify code violations, wear‑and‑tear, or potential safety hazards.
  • Safety Protocols: Follow strict OSHA safety guidelines, including the mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), arc flash safety boundaries, and standard Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols before servicing any energized equipment.
  • Blueprint Reading: Interpret and work from complex technical blueprints, wiring schematics, single‑line diagrams, and architectural drawings to accurately trace circuits and map out new installations.
  • Tool & Material Management: Clean, maintain, and properly store specialized electrical tools and testing equipment, and report when material stock runs low.
  • Record Keeping: Document and update facility master blueprints to reflect system modifications, log completed preventative maintenance tasks and accurately track time and materials in a TMA work order system.
  • Coordination: Collaborate and coordinate effectively with facility managers, other skilled trades (HVAC, plumbing, ), and city/state electrical inspectors to ensure projects are completed seamlessly and on schedule.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey level electrician experience;
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A valid Class “C” driver’s license at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • A valid Journeyman Electrician License / Certification (or relevant state/municipal electrical credential) OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Please Note: Positions in this class provide assistance to higher‑level staff in determining air conditioning and refrigeration needs and are distinguished from positions at the lower level by lead worker responsibilities that require judgments and decisions of a supervisory nature and the independence with which duties are performed. This position requires travel between all main campuses and satellite campuses.

Weekly Schedule Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

Salary Information

CBA A, E, F Grade 32, Step 1 - $59,508.00 *This position is contingent upon ongoing and available funding. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
