Qualifications

Job description

The Electrician is responsible for independently performing the installation, troubleshooting, testing, repair, and maintenance of a wide range of electrical systems and equipment supporting the operation of Merom Generating Station, a two-unit, 1,080 MW coal-fired power plant. This highly skilled position ensures the reliable and safe operation of plant electrical infrastructure, including power distribution systems, switchgear, motor control centers, turbines, boilers, process controls, conveyors, pumps, and auxiliary equipment.

The Electrician works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and other technical personnel to diagnose issues, complete preventive and corrective maintenance activities, support equipment installations and upgrades, and ensure compliance with plant safety procedures and clearance permit requirements. This role also provides technical guidance to apprentices and less experienced employees, maintains accurate maintenance documentation, and actively promotes a strong safety culture while contributing to plant reliability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoots or repairs and performs all maintenance procedures on all electrical equipment associated with the generating station including: Boilers and turbines, water and steam systems, pumps, valves and condensers, lighting, public address and television systems, heating, air-conditioning and ventilating equipment, batteries and chargers, fire protection systems, elevators, coal yard scales and vehicles, hoppers, pulverizers, conveyors and hammer mills and ash removal systems, water and air heaters, precipitators, process controls, annunciators and data loggers, stack, blowers and draft fans, demineralizer systems, 4160 Switchgear and motor control centers, and any other electrical distribution systems.
  • Installs and makes available for use the type of equipment listed above.
  • Assures that all work performed is in compliance with the Plant Clearance Permit System.
  • Performs assignments regarding the review of specifications of newly acquired equipment and the performance of check-outs and verifications of quality and quantity in order to make recommendations concerning the equipment availability.
  • Makes sketches, takes notes and completes reports in order to maintain complete and accurate records about the repair and maintenance of equipment, reports any abnormal or potentially dangerous conditions to the appropriate supervisor(s) in a responsible and timely fashion.
  • Ensures proper utilization, maintenance, and security of assigned tools, equipment, and work areas.
  • Makes recommendations to the Electrical Maintenance Supervisor about any practices, procedures, or requirements in order to facilitate maintenance schedules, short- or long-range plans, or any other efficiencies or cost improvements.
  • Provides the necessary on the job training and guidance of assigned electrical apprentices or of other personnel of lesser experience, in order to upgrade their electrical maintenance skills and to enhance the possibility of greater responsibility and utilization of skills.
  • Acts in an exemplary manner in order to maintain and promote safe practices and procedures and participates in scheduled safety meetings and first aid classes.
  • Coordinates with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Relay and Substation personnel to obtain equipment clearances, support maintenance activities, resolve technical issues, and execute plant projects.Works with manufacturer representatives and vendors to support equipment installation, repairs, training, technical troubleshooting, and the implementation of best practices for plant reliability and performance.

Qualifications and Skills
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Additional academic background in electrical maintenance equivalent to the coursework associated with four years of electrical apprenticeship.
  • Four years with an electric utility or a comparable industry where a strong background in electrical maintenance was obtained.
  • Broad knowledge regarding Installation, Technology, Testing, Repair and Maintenance of power plant electrical equipment.

Working Conditions
  • Power plant environment may require extended hours and rotating shift work schedule.

$51.75 - $51.75 an hour

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record, as this position requires occasional travel for company business. Candidates should be comfortable operating a vehicle as part of their job responsibilities and must meet any applicable company and insurance requirements.
