Job summary

The Instrument and Controls (I&C) Technician at Merom Generating Station in Sullivan, Indiana, performs installation, calibration, testing, and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems across plant equipment. Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-year associate’s degree in electronic technology or military training equivalence.
  • Four years with an electric utility or comparable industry with instrument and control maintenance background.
  • Broad knowledge of installation, testing, maintenance and repair of power plant instrumentation and control systems.

Responsibilities

Job description

The Instrument and Controls (I&C) Technician is responsible for independently performing the installation, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of instrumentation, control systems, and related electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, and computer-based equipment at Merom Generating Station, a two-unit, 1,080 MW coal-fired power plant. This role ensures the reliable operation of critical plant control and monitoring systems that support safe, efficient, and compliant power generation.

The I&C Technician collaborates with plant operations, maintenance, engineering, and vendor personnel to diagnose system issues, implement repairs and upgrades, commission new equipment, and optimize process control performance. The position maintains accurate technical documentation, provides technical guidance and training to less experienced employees, promotes safe work practices, and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance plant reliability, efficiency, and operational excellence.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Tests or performs technical analysis and subsequently repairs all malfunctions or aberrations, that are encountered in the maintenance, operation or testing of instrumentation and control equipment, and to take the appropriate action to ensure continuity of the systems.
  • Performs installations and puts into service instrumentation and control systems equipment.
  • Makes sketches, takes notes, draws graphs and completes reports in order to maintain complete and accurate records about the installation, testing, repair and maintenance of equipment. Reports any abnormal or potentially dangerous conditions to the appropriate supervisor in a responsible and timely fashion.
  • Provides on-the-job training and guidance of personnel of lesser classifications in order to upgrade their skills.
  • Ensures proper utilization, maintenance and security of assigned tools, equipment and work areas.
  • Reviews with and provides appropriate input to the Instrument Supervisor Technician or the Instrument Supervisor, any recommendations about practices, procedures, system requirements or improvements in order to facilitate maintenance schedules, short- or long- range plans, or any other efficiencies or cost improvements.
  • Acts in an exemplary manner in order to maintain and promote safe practices and procedures, and participates in safety meetings and first-aid classes.
  • Collaborates and exchanges technical information with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Storeroom personnel, and manufacturer representatives to support equipment clearances, troubleshooting, installations, repairs, training activities, procurement of tools and materials, and the successful execution of maintenance and plant improvement projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications And Skills
  • High School Diploma, or its equivalent
  • 2-year associate’s degree in electronic technology, or its equivalent in military training and service.
  • Four years with an electric utility or a comparable industry where a strong background in instrument and control maintenance was obtained.
  • Broad knowledge of installation, testing, maintenance and repair of all power plant instrumentation and control systems equipment.

$52.75 - $52.75 an hour

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record, as this position requires occasional travel for company business. Candidates should be comfortable operating a vehicle as part of their job responsibilities and must meet any applicable company and insurance requirements.
