Job Description
Purpose
The Electrical Technician is responsible for maintaining equipment in optimal running conditions. Determine the cause of electrical, mechanical breakdowns, repair and return equipment to proper operating order in minimum time.
Responsibilities
- Perform electrical maintenance on all equipment, troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed, perform preventive maintenance on all manufacturing equipment, assist operators when necessary.
- Understand PLC logic, use laptop for troubleshooting, modify existing PLC programs, write new logic for new PLC programs, and have a working knowledge of AC/DC drive systems.
- Manage projects through the entire life cycle, revise machine drawings using industry‑standard symbols and representation, and develop electrical and mechanical drawings using AutoCAD.
- Assist in the maintenance of spare‑parts inventory, use machine‑shop tools such as welder, drill press, mill, roll grinder, lathes, gas torch, etc., and describe how components interact with each other.
- Identify different types of bearings and belts and understand hazards associated with all machines.
- Identify potential machinery failures and worn parts, and be able to “dry run” all machinery.
- Read and understand hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical drawings; troubleshoot when no hydraulic/pneumatic drawings are available; read and understand electrical schematics.
- Assist in special projects including equipment installation, machine and building modifications, and safety improvements; install and maintain electrical and electronics systems; lay out and repair machine parts to exact tolerances; diagnose malfunctions and make required repairs and adjustments to keep machines in production.
- Assemble, align units and machines, make sketches of parts, maintain a safe and clean working environment, and be available for call‑in equipment and building maintenance problems.
- Maintain Amcor Certified Electrical Worker status.
- Follow all safety guidelines for lockout/tag‑out set forth by the department, plant and Amcor.
- Adhere to and execute applicable Environmental Health & Safety programs to provide a safe and clean workplace as required by Amcor, local, state and federal regulations.
Experience
- Knowledgeable concerning complex electrical and mechanical principles.
- Considerable knowledge of the practice, methods, tools, equipment and materials of the electrical trade.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards of the electrical trade and necessary safety precautions.
- Knowledge of applicable electrical codes.
- Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
- Mentally visualize and comprehend all aspects of manufacturing equipment or tooling problems, understand inter‑relationships of factors, and pay attention to detail.
- Integrate existing methods with innovations to economically solve production problems in a timely manner.
- Initiative and ability to work effectively with little direction.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers and management staff.
- Self‑motivated with good problem‑solving skills.
Qualifications
- AAS in Mechanical/Electrical field (preferred)
- 2‑5 years of industrial maintenance experience
- Knowledge of electrical systems including distribution, circuits, wiring, fuses, switches and relays
- Understanding of PLC ladder logic, I/O and machine control devices
- Understanding of lubrication procedures, including use of oil and grease
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems including belts, pulleys, gears, motors and transmissions
- Ability to read schematics and blueprints and trace problems when prints are not available
- Basic knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems and devices
- Minimum two‑to‑three years of technical training
- Certification in NFPA 70E or ability to become certified
- AutoCAD or electronic drawing knowledge
- Physical tasks: lift up to 50 pounds, use hoist frequently, bend, twist, squat for approx. 3 hours, walk/stand on concrete for 6‑9 hours, and operate in a non‑climate‑controlled facility.
Language Skills
Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English. Able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Mathematical Skills
Very good mathematical skills with ability to use electrical measuring and gauging tools.
Safety
Adheres to safety policies and procedures in compliance with AEP’s guidelines, including wearing PPE in designated areas. Visually inspects production area for tripping hazards, equipment safeguards, employee safety, and adherence to policies and maintains compliance with OSHA and company housekeeping rules.
