Job summary

The City of Lansing is seeking an Electrical Inspector to join the Building Safety division. The role focuses on applying the Michigan Residential Code, National Electrical Code, and state standards to ensure electrical work conforms to codes and safety requirements.

You will review plans, issue permits, perform inspections, and participate in fire alarm reviews. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED, six years as a journeyman electrician, and a valid Journeyman or Master

  • Valid Journeyman or Master Electrician license.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Review applications for electrical permits to ensure plans conform to codes and zoning ordinances.
  • Issue permits and perform field inspections of work per permits.
  • Perform Residential Electrical Inspections and periodic inspections of commercial/industrial occupancies.
  • Conduct fire alarm plan review and inspections.
  • Advise owners on corrections to conform to municipal codes.
  • Be on call for LBWL, LPD and Building Safety/maintenance responses.
  • Review blueprints and maintain operating records and reports.

Job description

The Building Safety division in the Economic, Development & Planning Department is seeking an Electrical Inspector to join their professional team. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in expanding their experience with Michigan Residential Code, National Electrical Code, related code standards established by State law, practical application of the theory of electricity as it applies to wiring, in addition to the use of tools, equipment and testing devices of the electrical trade. This position ensures that properties within the City of Lansing conform to pertinent electrical code.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING:

Must meet minimum eligibility requirements in accordance with State Act #407 for registration as a Electrical Inspector and Plan Reviewer and make application for provisional registration for both these titles within thirty (30) days of notification of selection for this position. Registration as Electrical Inspector and Plan Reviewer must be retained during the entire length of employment in this position. FAILURE TO OBTAIN OR RETAIN BOTH OF THESE REGISTRATIONS WILL RESULT IN APPROPRIATE ACTION CONSISTENT WITH THE TEAMSTERS COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UNIT AGREEMENT.

IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Six (6) years of experience as a Journeyman’s level electrician; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Journeyman’s or Master's Electrician License
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS INLCUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Reviews applications for electrical permits to ensure that the plans conform to the codes and zoning ordinances. The Inspector needs to do plan reviews for Residential and Commercial projects from new projects to additions, to remodels and to repairs.
  • Issues permits and makes field inspections of work being done in accordance with these permits.
  • Make Residential Electrical Inspections from newly built homes, to additions, to remodels to repairs, and makes periodic inspection of commercial and industrial occupancies to see that electrical installations conform to the pertinent electrical code.
  • Fire alarm plan review and inspections.
  • Advises owners on necessary corrections to conform to municipal codes.
  • Conducts inspections after fires to check damage and ascertain possible electrical causes. To be on call for (LBWL) Lansing Board of Water and Lights, (LPD) Lansing Police Dept. and Lansing Building Safety and Maintenance.
  • Checks and approves blueprints for proposed construction. Maintains operating records and prepares reports.

Position offers a flexible work schedule and allows a four (4) day work week, if desired.
