Responsibilities

Position Overview

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Safety, Division of Fire Safety, has a full-time vacancy for an Electrical Inspector, SOC Title 47-4010 BLDG INSPECTORS-4. This position has a 40 hour work week and is considered non-exempt.

This position offers a Trainee Status* startingat the following pay rate: $30.02 per hour. *Candidates hired at a Trainee Status must meet minimum qualifications within one (1) year of hire date. *See total compensation information at the bottom of announcement.

Summary

Conducts thorough plan reviews and inspections of new and existing electrical installations, alterations and/or repairs to ensure applicable laws, rules, codes and standards are met. Conducts investigations of suspected electrical code violations.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS

Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Equivalent combination of 9 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in the electrical field, with at least 3 years of conducting inspections of construction projects and technical interpretations of the National Electrical Code.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

• Valid NH Master Electrician license
• Valid driver's license

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Selected candidate will undergo a fingerprint-based criminal background check and motor vehicle record check in order to ensure suitability for exposure to confidential information
• Must be available for overtime work on short notice and emergency work at times other than normal business hours based on workload and critical need

TRAINEE OPTION

Candidates with an equivalent combination of 8+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in 'trainee status' for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs construction plan review to verify state building and fire code compliance and issues approvals when directed by the Deputy Fire Marshal. Assists with inspections of construction projects in state buildings and others as required in RSA 155-A and Saf-C 8100.
• Assists local fire officials and code enforcement officials with inspections of residential, commercial and industrial installations on premises for which permits have been issued, as the work is in process and upon completion by licensed electricians and provides technical assistance and interpretations of the applicable laws, rules, codes, and standards.
• Investigates complaints of reported/suspected electrical code violations as directed. Assists in addressing violations and may provide testimony in court or administrative hearings as directed.
• Promotes effective application of state building and fire codes by documenting code violations and writing detailed inspection reports, following up with re-inspections as needed. Works with building owners and contractors to achieve compliance with the applicable laws, rules, codes, and standards.
• Assembles and prepares background information and documentation regarding non-compliance activities, code violations, safety reviews, and licensure discrepancies for required inspection reports.
• Assists fire departments and other agencies in the investigation of electrical related incidents and in identifying potential contributing factors such as violations of codes and regulations.
• Provides guidance and education to stakeholders, electrical contractors, and concerned public groups, on electrical codes, safety standards, and the application of other applicable laws, rules, codes, and standards.
