Job summary

Formlabs is seeking an Electrical Engineering Intern for Summer 2027, onsite in Somerville, MA. You will design, prototype, and validate electronics and electromechanical subsystems and work with a multidisciplinary team to meet product requirements.

Applicants should bring hands-on experience with soldering, PCB assembly, and microcontroller programming in C, plus Python scripting for tests. A portfolio demonstrating projects is required for consideration.

Qualifications

• Portfolio of previous engineering work/projects required.
• Experience with microcontrollers, sensors, feedback, or motor control is valued.
• Ability to design, assemble and debug PCBs; comfort coding in C and Python.

Job description

Your Impact:

3D printing requires a complex interplay of software, hardware, and electronics. Working on our Electrical Engineering team, you’ll get to do it all! From designing and building your own boards, to hacking on firmware, to finding your own elegant solutions to problems on real products that will ship to real customers. As part of our interdisciplinary team, you will be working hands‑on with various types of hardware.

Internship Term: Summer 2027 (May/June - August)

Commitment: Full-time
Location: Onsite in Somerville, MA
Application Requirements: A portfolio of your previous engineering work/projects is required. Your application will not be considered without a portfolio.

The Job:

• Design, prototype, and validate electronics and electromechanical subsystems
• Work closely with other engineers to develop system requirements and make design decisions

You:

• Are comfortable moving between analog and digital systems
• Are ready to dive into complex electromechanical subsystems
• Are experienced with soldering and other aspects of prototyping your own designs
• Are comfortable doing independent research and development and making design decisions
• Have worked on projects with microcontrollers, sensors, feedback, or motor control
• Have designed, assembled, and debugged PCBs
• Like to code and are comfortable programming microcontrollers in C and developing test scripts in Python
• Are excited about designing products that work well and delight customers

Bonus Skills (Optional):

• Experience working on electro‑mechanical products

Compensation

Interns at Formlabs are paid on a bi‑weekly pay schedule. The pay range for this role will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, location and expected impact on the organization. This is a salaried role, so you will always be paid based on the assumed 40 hours per week as a full‑time intern. This position does not offer housing or relocation assistance.

The weekly pay range for this role is:

$1,575—$1,950 USD
